BINTULU: The Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM) and the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences (FSPM) Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) have undertaken various initiatives towards promoting the development of a modern agricultural sector in the country.

Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) General Manager Rodziah Morshidi said the initiatives taken by both authorities were very much appreciated as UPMKB is one of the local universities specialising in the field.

She said unlike other countries, Malaysia still puts the agriculture industry as the largest contributor to the national economy apart from natural resources such as oil and gas.

She said this at the opening ceremony of a Conference on Agricultural Statistics 2015 at Bintulu Promenade Hotel Tuesday night.

She added for this purpose, mathematics and statistics play an important role in ensuring the agricultural sector can be managed productively and systematically.

While describing the conference as timely Rodziah hoped it will achieve its objective especially in addressing the various issues related to agriculture in the country.

“What I expect from this three-day conference is it will open the eyes and minds of all those concerned on other sectors that can help the development of agriculture, especially in Bintulu and the country in general, ‘’ she said.

INSPEM director Dr Kamel Ariffin Mohd Atan and FSPM dean Dr Nur Ashikin Abdullah were among those present.
