SIBU: It is hoped that a new Fire and Rescue station for Matu District would be included among the developments under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP).

According to Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie, there are about 4,000 houses across this district and most of them are wooden structures. He said he raised the request during the last State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting in Kuching.

“There were six cases previously, where houses were totally razed down by fires. The nearest fire station is in Mukah, and given the distance from Matu, it is difficult for firefighters to respond to an emergency in time.

“Therefore, it is also the fervent hope of the folk here that a fire station, irrespective of class, should be built in Matu,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Abu Seman, who is also a political secretary to chief minister, was asked if the Wednesday fire that destroyed the 30-year-old Daro Clinic, spelt the urgency for a fire station to be built in Matu District.

He also pointed out that the request for the district’s fire station would be among key subjects that he would highlight in the next DUN sitting, apart from the request for improved Internet connectivity to facilitate learning and transfer of knowledges.

“To provide better Internet coverage, there should more telecommunication towers being built (in the district).”

Abu Seman also hoped that the government would consider looking into upgrading ageing primary schools in Matu, mostly of which were built from timber.
