SIBU: The two-day ‘Sibu Sihat’ programme was a great success, judging from the heaps of praise received from the public.

One of many locals who hope more health programmes will be rolled out in the future, Rusdi Sirad, 57, said the programme enabled him to go for screening conveniently.

He added that health checks were important to detect chronic diseases early.

He figured it would have been costly had he gone for checking outside.

“I hope this programme can be continued to benefit more people,” enthused Rusdi, who stays in Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Teku, here.

The two-day programme which ended yesterday was an initiative from Nangka Service Centre, where some 800 people underwent free health screenings.

Longhouse chief Eddy Jemat too praised the programme. According to him, he had wanted to check his blood pressure and run some other tests as well.

“It is important for one to go for regular health checks,” Eddy said.

The facilities at MUC hall made it conducive to run the programme, he added.

Hapesah Wasli, 56, from Kampung Bandong had only good things to say. “So far, so good. But I hope more people will make good use of this opportunity to go for health screening,” she said.

Mornie Abdullah, 57, from Kampung Nangka echoed Hapesah’s view.

“The way I see it, this programme is very meaningful and I certainly look forward to more of such programmes in future,” she said.

Meanwhile, Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee said there were nine doctors, including cardiologists helping out with the programmes.

The doctors were from Unimas, Sarawak General Hospital, Armed Forces and Sibu Hospital, Dr Annuar, said.

The cardiologist stressed on the importance of early detection, given chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure would continue to rise due to lifestyle change brought on by the rapid pace of development.
