Aspirasi Mahasiswa takes lion’s share of UMS students council seats

KOTA KINABALU: Aspirasi Mahasiswa, one of three groupings that contested for the general and faculty seats in the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Students’ Representative Council election yesterday, has won most of the contested seats.

The group won all the 10 general seats where seven were for the campus here, one for the university’s campus in Sandakan and two for the university’s international campus in Labuan.

There were 22 faculty seats up for contest with 17 for UMS campus in Kota Kinabalu, three for the university’s international campus in Labuan and two for the campus in Sandakan.

Aspirasi Mahasiswa won all the faculty seats in Kota Kinabalu and the two seats in Sandakan. The winners of the three seats in Labuan were still unannounced by 9 pm yesterday.

The two other groupings were Barisan Mahasiswa Cemerlang and Pro Mahasiswa.

A total of 10 candidates won uncontested yesterday.

Meanwhile, UMS vice chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Harun Abdullah said there has been an increase in the number of students casting their votes in this year’s election.

A total of 16,941 voters or 38 percent of the students population cast their votes yesterday, he said, adding that this signified an increase in the percentage of voters as compared to the previous year (28 percent).
