Saberkas helps to shape future leaders

KUCHING: Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) clubs formed in higher learning institutes will help to form future Sarawak leaders.

Its assistant secretary-general Gabriel Jatu said it had been proven since the formation of Saberkas in 1972 that it had been shaping leaders in Sarawak until today.

“Saberkas enables and gives members a chance to move anywhere, including organising events with Saberkas branches everywhere. It is a platform for us to shape leaders in higher learning institutions,” he said at the launching of the Swinburne University of Technology chapter here Thursday night.

Gabriel added that Saberkas members had many benefits, including the opportunity to organise Corporate Social Responsibility programmes.

He praised Swinburne students for their efforts in forming the club to encourage more students to involve themselves with youth activities.

“Saberkas generally involves youths in the state and it is a platform for them or students to move anywhere not only in Kuching but even to Limbang or the interior,” he said.

Meanwhile, Swinburne student operations registrar and director Hussain Taiban said the formation of the Saberkas club was appropriate to involve its students in social activities.

“It is extremely appropriate as the university is about to launch leadership study scholarships and one of its criteria is that students are active in social or volunteerism activities.

“In fact, I feel that by becoming members, our students will show their leadership skills through this club,” he said, adding that membership was not only open to local students but also foreign students.

There were currently 51 students registered with the Saberkas Club Swinburne chapter.
