KUCHING: Members of the state civil service should not neglect their role as parents at home and must be effective in raising their children.

In giving this reminder, Chief Minister’s wife Datin Patinggi Dato Jamilah Anu said compared to past generations, the young people of today were different.

“They (current generation) are smarter in their undertakings and adapt quickly. In this sense, we need to be good examples to them,” said Jamilah.

She added that integrity and good moral values should start from home and parents should not expose them to negative influences.

Jamilah gave this advice during her opening remark at the Parenting@Work seminar held in conjunction with the State Civil Service Psychology Day at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

“This is why it is important for parents to have a sense of positive attitude both at work and home, and at the same time constantly showing good attitude to their children,” she said at the seminar, organised by the state National Family Development and Population Council (LPPKN).

At the same time, Jamilah reminded civil servants that it was crucial to have work-life balance.

“Some parents have trouble in dividing their time between work and family, and it is my wish that participants of this seminar will learn and improve on this problem which is affecting most parents in the working world,” she said.

Earlier on, state Human Resources Unit director Dr Sabariah Putit said the programme was held to create awareness of the importance of creating an environment conducive for working.

“The programme will be expanded to include other related government agencies and government-linked companies as well in future,” she said.

Among the measures taken by the state government to ensure that its staff would have a balance in work and family life, she added, were to establish childcare centres in government offices and introducing flexi-working hours for parents.

State LPPKN state director Rohaini Ahmad and state Women and Family Department director Noriah Ahmad were among those present.
