Bau District Officer Inting Nyami said among the main attractions would be the log race, tug-of war on a raft and raft race, offering more than RM20,000 in cash prizes.

He pointed out that the entries to the various competitions with minimal fees were still open for the public to participate.

The highlight of the festival would be the Jong Regatta — the traditional regatta for miniature boats.

“For this year’s event, we expect about 10,000 visitors to turn up and also attractive activities to be held for the public, for both old and young to enjoy,” he told a press conference at Bau District Council to announce the event.

According to him, the response for last year’s festival was very encouraging.

The activities would also include children’s colouring competition, handicrafts sale, performance by local artistes and music bands, mass exercise and cooking competition, he added.

On the cooking competition, Inting, who is also the organising chairman, said the objective was to help identify dishes unique to this district.

Inting also assured all that the security and safety during the festival would be well taken care of with the participation of agencies like police, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department.

He also stated that the organising committee had written to Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and had been assured by them that the lake water was safe to hold water sports and other activities.

Meanwhile, Inting said Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg would launch the festival on Oct 30, while the closing on Nov 1 would be performed by Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister, who is also Mas Gading MP, Anthony Nogeh.

Also at the press conference were Bau District Education officer Les Met, Social Development Youth Ministry officer Paul Kawin Pipo and Bau District police chief DSP Mohd Sabri Zainol.
