BAU: Police disclosed there is problem of drug abuse especially among youths and school children here but it is not serious.

Bau district police chief DSP Mohd Sabri Zainol, who confirmed this yesterday, did not mentioned the types of drug.

“Yes..cases of drug abuse here (Bau) do exist but it is under control and most of the abusers are youths in their 20’s and school children,” he said at the sideline of a press conference to announce the Tasik Biru Festival 2015 by Bau district officer Inting Nyami.

Sabri assured that police would continue to address the problem through dialogues with community leaders and organise drug awareness programmes.

He added that the police would also act swiftly on any report of drugs trafficking or abuse through raids and surveillance and appealed to the public to inform his men of such activities.

Inting who was also at the press conference, announced that the District office would organise a drug awareness programme this Saturday here for parents and community leaders.

Sabri told reporters most crimes that occurred in the district were motorcycle thefts and house-breaking.

However, he stated that crime index in the district had decreased by 40 per cent as so far this year 34 cases were recorded compared to 54 cases in the corresponding period last year.

On illegal gold mining which was rampant in the district in the past, Sabri said it seemed to have stopped now as there had been no such case reported of late.

However, he pointed out that police and District Office were monitoring the situation to prevent this dangerous activity.
