KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who was a fine singer in his younger days, has been helping to raise funds for charity at various dinners by a rendition of his old time favourite songs.

He used to be the singing member of a band called ‘Vagabonds’ back in the 60s in the city and one of his favourite numbers is ‘Can’t help falling in love’ by Elvis Presley.

To date, a total of RM300,000 has been received in sponsorship money which will be distributed to selected charitable and welfare bodies.

The chief minister took to the stage again last Friday during a dinner of the Bumiputera Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurs’ (SMEs) Awards Presentation held at a local hotel where about RM100,000 was received in pledges from entrepreneurs.

The chief minister, who always has the less fortunate at heart, said he would continue to sing for charity when he spoke to thousands of people in Bekenu Wednesday in conjunction with the launch of the construction of Sungai Sibuti bridge.

He said the first thought that came to his mind when he was appointed chief minister about 19 months ago was how to help the poor, the underprivileged and the disabled.
