BINTULU: The Islamic Welfare of Tatau Education Office donated RM15,000 to its staff and students who were affected by a storm that hit the area on Oct 26.

The donation was presented by Tatau Education officer Mohadi Mubin at SMK Tatau’s Dewan Sri Annau yesterday. The recipients were from SMK Tatau, SK Tatau and SJK Chung Hua Tatau.

According to Mohadi, RM5,000 of the total amount was donated by Tatau Education Office staff while Syarikat Gagasan and Tatau Education Islamic Welfare Body each contributed RM5,000.

Earlier, Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip presented a RM10,000 grant to the Islamic welfare body, of which RM5,000 was used to assist the victims of the storm.

In SMK Tatau, 76 students and three teachers were affected, while 57 pupils, two teachers and three staff members from SK Tatau, and 19 pupils and one teacher from SJK Chung Hua Tatau were also affected and received the aid. Some of their houses were damaged after the 2am incident, as students had to deal with waterlogged textbooks and school uniforms.

Mohadi thanked all those who contributed aid to the victims.

“I hope this contribution would at least ease the burden of the staff and students involved. This effort also shows our concern for the victims,” he said.

In the meantime, he also urged Tatau Education Office and school counsellors to conduct group counselling sessions for those affected by the incident.

He also allowed SK Tatau’s surau to function as a temporary mosque for prayers after receiving approval by the state Education Department.
