KUCHING: The State Forest Department has inked another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fuji Xerox Malaysia to further enhance collaboration in the mangrove tree planting programme which has now reached its fourth year.

Sarawak Forest Department director Sapuan Ahmad said since the programme was launched in 2012, a total of 3,704 mangrove trees have been planted at Muara Tebas and Kuching Wetlands National Park (KWNP) here.

“Fuji Xerox Malaysia is targeting to plant 20,000 mangrove trees by the year 2020. So far, they have planted more than 13,000 mangrove trees nationwide in this programme which is part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.

“I am very confident they will be able to achieve their target by then,” he told a press conference prior to the MoU signing ceremony held at Wisma Sumber Alam here yesterday.

Meanwhile, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (Malaysia Operations) Marketing & Japanese Account Division general manager Toru Nakazaki said the Japanese company focused on replanting mangroves because the declining resource is essential in nourishing and protecting the local marine ecosystems.

“We want the programme to engage the communities, employees, customers and media to increase awareness and appreciation,” he said. He hoped to invite universities to conduct scientific studies on the survival and impact of the trees planted.

Sapuan and Toru later signed the MoU which was witnessed by State Forest Department International Affairs Division assistant director Latifah Teh and Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (Malaysia Operations) Regional Sales Operations senior general manager Johnny Loy.
