MIRI: The proposed Limbang Bridge project comprising two bridges across Sungai Limbang and Sungai Bunut and a 3.5km connecting roads from both sides of the main bridge, will open up more development areas in the district.

The proposed scope of work by Public Works Department includes the main landmark component of a two-lane single carriageway cable stayed bridge across Limbang River spanning 830 metres long and 11.4 metres wide, and connected by a 1.2km road to the town.

The opposite side of the bridge would be connected by a 2.3km road to the existing Jalan Bukit Lubok which currently ends at the ferry point.

The 70m by 11.4m Sungai Bunut 2 Bridge would be built at this connecting road.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem performed the earth-breaking ceremony of the project on Oct 20. It was initially approved by his predecessor Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud prior to his appointment as Head of State.

Locals are looking forward to the construction of Sungai Limbang Bridge at Pabahanan and supporting infrastructure as the catalyst of greater economic and physical development in Limbang.

It will slash the travel time to barely 45 minutes to reach Bandar Seri Begawan from Limbang, a welcomed development for visitors from Brunei and vice-versa. Travellers currently have to pass through the Tedungan CIQ and Batu Danau region.

The distance from the town to the Malaysian-Brunei border would be reduced to less than 20km from 50km presently.

The RM150 million bridge will link Malay villages across the river who now have to depend on ferry and boats to go to town.
