KUCHING: A total of 500 people participated in the ‘National Tax Seminar 2015 on 2016 Budget Proposal and Audit & Investigation-Facts and Myths’ at Pullman Hotel & Resorts Kuching yesterday.

Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Malaysia chief executive officer/director general Tan Sri Datuk Wira Dr Mohd Shukor Mahfar said that the seminar would allow them to know in greater detail tax issues following the announcement of Budget 2016 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently.

“It is related to the amendment in the provisions of the Income Tax Act, the consequences arise following the amendment issues,” he said before launching the seminar.

“The seminar also focuses on the explanation of work when they investigate and do audit which is carried out by IRB,” he added.

His text of speech was read by state director of IRB Ramlot Keli who represented him at the seminar.

Mohd Shukor revealed that the overall 2016 Budget proposal contained 26 amendments and three allocations for Savings and Transitional to the Income Tax Act 1967, five amendments to the Petroleum Act (Income Tax) 1967, four amendments to Real Property Gains Tax 1976, two amendments to Labuan Business Activity Tax Act 1990 and two amendments to the Promotion of Investment Acts 1986.

On the topic of Audit and Investigation, Mohd Shukor said the focus was on explanation of work process while doing investigation and audit carried out by IRB Malaysia.

“The purpose is to increase the level of knowledge and to correct the negative perception people have on investigation activities and audit work implemented by officers from IRB Malaysia,” he added.

Mohd Shukor pointed out that the topic would also assist participants to gain better understanding
of correct and systematic income tax and record keeping which can help taxpayers with excess taxation, composite tax and penalties.

He urged participants not to be left behind and to follow the two sessions of the seminar as they would provide them with information on latest development and changes in management systems and administration on taxation matters.

Mohd Shukor also announced that IRB Malaysia would carry out ‘Kempen Cinta Malaysia’ with celebrity Datuk Aznil Nawawi to produce a society that is tax-literate.

He assured that IRB Malaysia would continue to ensure that their administrative system can manage taxation in the country.

“We will ensure that our tax system will be managed efficiently and effectively, in accordance with the Income Tax Act and other laws of the country,” he added.

The seminar was organised by IRB Malaysia.
