PRS may field woman candidate

KUCHING: PRS president Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing does not discount the possibility that his party will field a woman candidate in the coming state election.

According to him, the party has several women members who are suitable and ready to contest in the state election which may be held early next year.

“I would love to field a woman candidate in the next election, however we have not identified who and where she will be contesting,” said Masing at a press conference at the party’s headquarters here yesterday.

He also said the future of women leaders in the country was very promising as reflected by the huge number of female students in institutions of higher learning.

Quoting statistics, he said female students make up 60 per cent of the country’s total university student population.

“When women have attained high education, they will be aiming for higher posts, which is good,” said Masing, who is also Minister of Land Development.

He added that a leader can either be a man or a woman as long as the person possesses the correct skills and attitude.

“The important thing is for a person to have the credibility and experience to administer a state,” he added.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that Tamin assemblyman Datuk Joseph Mauh had officially made his intention to retire from politics and that PRS had not identified his replacement.

“It is interesting to note that Joseph Mauh who is now in his 60s decides to voluntary retire which is very rare for politicians,” said Masing, who is also Baleh assemblyman.

In jest, he said politicians would rather work until they die or are defeated in elections rather than quit politics.

“Maybe it is because he (Mauh) has been MP for three terms and a state assemblyman for two terms, which is why he had called it a day,” said Masing.

Masing pointed out that it is important for politicians to realise when to call it a day as there are individuals better than them who are able to administer the state.

“We must know when we are having enough,” he added.
