KUCHING: Motorists are advised to take extra care when passing through Jalan Tun Jugah and Jalan Stutong leading to Taman BDC, especially the turn to RH Plaza, due to upgrading works on the drains there, which will go on till end of the year.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has suggested that road-users use alternative routes due to delays as the junction to Jalan Tun Jugah will be closed from 8am on Nov 16 till midnight of Nov 18 to facilitate the laying of pipe there.

The public can use the road leading to Four Points by Sheraton Hotel to access RH Plaza from Jalan Tun Jugah roundabout.

Kuching South Mayor Datuk James Chan disclosed that the RM1.4-million drain upgrading project was meant to address flood problems in the area.

“The Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) has informed MBKS that works have started and must be completed by end of this year.

“The drain project is a priority as we have taken into account the impact on residents in the area. For now, it (project site) is too dangerous for motorists and other road-users,” he said during a meeting with DID officers, contractors and community leaders at MBKS headquarters here yesterday.

Meanwhile, DID assured that safety measures including blinker lights, warning signs, temporary signboards and barricades had been set up there.

“The scope of works will include laying pipe culverts, widening of the RC (reinforced concrete) drains, installing precast concrete road curbs as well as reinstatement and resurfacing works.”

“Another major laying of pipe crossing the main road (Jalan Stutong) is estimated to last a week. It is scheduled on Dec 9. As such, half of the road is being closed from 8pm to 5am.”

For the convenience of road-users, DID said major works would only be carried out from 8pm to midnight, adding that so far, police had yet to receive any complaint from the public.

The department also assured the public that the diversion of water flow to Sungai Maong Kiri through Hui Sing Garden would not affect areas around Jalan Durian Burung as the drainage design had taken into account the size of pipes, gradient limits and storage capacity calculations.
