KOTA SAMARAHAN: An aquarium decorating competition attracted 40 students from 10 primary and 10 secondary schools in Kuching and Samarahan to the vicinity of the civic centre here yesterday, which is the venue of the national-level farmers, fishermen and livestock breeders day ‘Hari Peladang, Penternak dan Nelayan 2015’ celebration this weekend.

The competition was organised by the state Fisheries Department and was one of the many events slatted for the celebration, held for the first time at the national level.

According to a press statement, the department said the purpose of the competition was to educate the young people to appreciate aquatic decoration and to inculcate the love of keeping domesticated animals and marine life.

“Working closely in pairs will give the young people the esprit de corps and sense of responsibilities to one another,” a spokesman of the state Fisheries Department said.

“It also gives the young people an exposure and how to work on the accessories that are being supplied to them,” he added.

He said the participants were guided by their teachers and that they had to complete the tasks within three hours.

“The participants have to know the various types of aquarium which are made from glass, plastic and fibre and the type of stands made of wood and steel and also the various types of filters.

The student could choose fresh water or salt water fish with sizes depending on the space available.

The winners of the competition will get their prizes on the day of the official launching, the spokesman said.

Kota Samarahan has the honour to host the national-level celebration which will be declared open by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Nov 28.
