KUCHING: Sarawak enjoyed a smooth passage into the quarterfinals of both the Boys U13 and Girls U13 team events of the 28th Milo Malaysia Hopes Table Tennis Championship at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 Alumni Hall here yesterday.

In the Girls U13 team preliminary rounds, Sarawak’s Karen Lyne Dick led teammates Tay Lynn Jia and Phoebe Ting Wei Jia to brush aside Pahang 3-0 in their opening match, and followed up with a 3-1 win over Penang.

The final match saw Sarawak thumping Perak 3-0 to top Group Q with six points.

Penang were second on five points, Perak third with four and last were Pahang with three after losing all their matches.

Sarawak will face Putrajaya in the last eight later yesterday while the other quarterfinals fixtures are Johor versus Sabah, Kuala Lumpur versus Negeri Sembilan and Penang taking on Selangor.

The Sarawak team of Too Ying Chuen, Christopher Goh Kho Hian Hui and Joel Chen Yu Chen breezed into the quarterfinals in the Boys U13 team contest after defeating Pahang 3-0 and Negeri Sembilan 3-0.

Their opponent in the last eight are Putrajaya and if they get past Putrajaya, they shall meet the winner of the match between Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.

Also booking their places in the quarterfinals in this category are Selangor who will play Negeri Sembilan and Johor who will face Penang.

As at press time (7pm), Sarawak have also won a match each in the U10 team event, with the boys crushing Kedah 3-0 in Group G and the girls blanking Perak 3-0 in the openers of the preliminary round competition.
