KUCHING: The Public Works Department (JKR) is currently doing a study on how much it would cost to upgrade the pothole-riddled Miri-Marudi Road to R1 grade.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the road will be upgraded under the ‘Jiwa Murni’ project which is endorsed by the Malaysian Armed Forces and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.

“Though this is not under my ministry, I will bring this matter up since there have been many complaints and we will try to find ways to see how JKR can take over and do the upgrading,” he told reporters when met after attending the PBB supreme council meeting at the party’s headquarters yesterday.

Fadillah, who is also PBB youth chief, said the frequent use

by heavy-laden vehicles had caused the road condition to deteriorate.

“We are also going to discuss this with both federal and state governments to try and finalise how much is the allocation in order for us to upgrade to R1 Grade, which means to elevate it to at least a gravel road,” he remarked.

“The allocation of funds will be distributed through the federal Ministry of Rural and Regional Development.”

Asked on how soon the upgrading works for the road would be implemented, Fadillah assured that he would fight for the allocation and “hope to get it done as soon as possible.”
