KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) is eyeing at least two seats from the 11 new state constituencies that were recently delineated.

Its president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said these additional seats were on top of the 19 state seats that the party would be contesting in the next election.

He revealed that one of the additional state seats that the party was eyeing is Batu Kitang, while the party is still weighing its chances in other seats.

Explaining the party’s choice of Batu Kitang, Dr Sim said the new constituency was delineated from Kota Sentosa and Batu Kawah state constituencies, which were traditionally allocated to SUPP.

“We discussed on election preparations and we are always confident. We also talked about the new state seats…Definitely, any seats that are divided from our own seats, we want SUPP to contest in those seats,” he told reporters after chairing the SUPP Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting at party headquarters here yesterday.

When asked whether the party had decided on all its candidates, Dr Sim said most of the candidates had been decided, except for one or two areas where the party would continue to monitor the potential candidates’ progress.

“We want our candidates to be truly the best on the ground. By next month, I believe all our candidates can be finalised.”

Meanwhile, SUPP stated in a press statement that in tandem with the recent announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem on the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) by the state government, SUPP would like to encourage Sarawak UEC graduates to apply

for vacancies or posts in Sarawak government ministries, departments and agencies.

“Upon the submissions of their applications, kindly also extend a copy to SUPP so that we will have particulars of such applications and for us to follow through.”
