SIBU: Sibu Table Tennis Association (STTA) is gunning for an unprecedented overall title in the five-day Inter-division Table Tennis Championship which began in Bintulu yesterday.

Its chairman Dr Clement Chen said his team should take advantage of the absence of many key players from other divisions to achieve that goal.

“So fight hard and aim for the highest,” he told the players before receiving the team colours from STTA president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming.

STTA is sending 50 players for all the eight categories, namely boy’s and girl’s (Under-8, U-10, U-13, U-15, U-18), men’s and women’s open, veteran and non-Chinese, and team events.

Much is expected from the women with Chen confident “they can grab at least seven to 10 gold medals from the total 24 gold medals at stake.”

Gold medals are also expected in the men’s veteran, particularly from the team event.

Chen also made a call for team spirit from players to cheer team-mates when they are not competing.

“Instead of fiddling away your time with your hand phones, it is best you lend support to your teammates as a motivation for them to win.”
