SARIKEI: An abandoned warehouse at Jalan Kubu Lama was destroyed in a fire which started around 8.45pm on Tuesday.

Sarikei Fire Station received a call from Sarikei Central Police Station around 8.47pm and sent a team of firefighters in a fire engine to the scene.

When the firefighters arrived around 8.51pm, 70 per cent of the semi-concrete warehouse was already engulfed by the fast spreading flames.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) district chief Suna Kaha said firefighters gave priority to preventing the fire from spreading to the LPG store and petrol kiosk located two metres away, as the warehouse was no longer in use.

A team of six firefighters in a fire engine dispatched by Bintangor Fire Station arrived at 9.22pm to assist while off-duty firefighters from here arrived in another fire engine at 9.25pm to join the operation.

Firefighters had to use water from the river due to low water pressure from the fire hydrant.

With the combined effort of 31 firefighters, the fire was finally brought under control by 9.30pm.

The operation was called off at 11.04pm after the fire was totally put out and no longer posed a danger to the nearby LPG store and petrol kiosk, he said.

“Ninety per cent of the 40 feet by 80 feet warehouse saved from a similar fate in 2013 was destroyed,” said Suna.

Total loss and cause of the fire have yet to be ascertained.
