STATE assemblyman for Engkilili, Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, brought up six requests for his constituency during the State Legislative Assembly sitting yesterday.

They were for roads, electricity supply, water supply, amenities and facilities, appointment of community leaders and people’s welfare.

On roads, he said among them was the construction of the road at lower Batang Ai from Stuga, Empelam, Basi, Tanjong downriver to Sri Aman as well as Ulu Skrang to be speeded up and to be surfaced with gravel and granite.

He also told the august House that the Tembarong road from the main Pan Borneo Highway to Rh Repong and Rh Bujeng, Tembarong, Skrang needed to be widened and upgraded to facilitate people’s movement.

On electricity supply, he requested that the installation of lamp posts and wiring work to longhouses in Kubal, Tisak area, Langkong, Kaong, Lipat area, Tembong, Kejemut and Rembai and the adjacent area be completed as soon as possible.

Regarding clean water supply, he mentioned that a number of longhouses in his constituency had no excess to it.

“As a result of no clean water supply, the people have to resort to untreated water from streams, wells and rivers. It is high time for them to have water supply so as to enjoy quality, hygienic life like others who already have,” he said.

As for amenities and facilities, he said the drainage system in areas of Skrang Hilir especially at Tisak, Kaong, Langkong was in poor condition, which needed urgent improvement and repair as they were prone to flooding even during slight rain.

He also said some primary and secondary school buildings including teachers’ quarters needed to be repaired and upgraded.

Citing SMK Engkilili as an example, he said the school was very crowded but little had been done to make it learning-friendly.

“I request the authority concerned to uplift the school condition and to equip it will all necessary tools and equipment to facilitate learning,” he said.

Other requests are to build Engkilili mini stadium, new police station, upgrade Skrang health and maternity clinic, and to upgrade the present bank into a full bank for better banking facilities.

On the people’s welfare, he asked that the flying doctor service to remote areas in Ulu Skrang and other remote areas in the state be continued.

“Though it has been suggested that the flying doctor service be terminated because it is too expensive to maintain, I suggest the government maintain such service until such time the people have access to roads or clinics built near their areas,” he pointed out.
