KUCHING: Five people were able to escape in the nick of time after their car burst into flames moments after crashing into a bus stop in Matang.

The incident occurred at around 6.30pm on Thursday when the five were making their way back from Sungai Cina at Mile 13 Jalan Matang to Matang Jaya in a Proton Saga.

The vehicle was said to have gone out of control at Mile 9 Jalan Matang and slammed into a bus stop before catching fire minutes later.

All five were able to exit the vehicle relatively unhurt and contacted the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for help as the flames engulfed their vehicle.

The group was later sent to Sarawak General Hospital where one passenger was treated for light injuries while the rest received outpatient treatment.

In a separate incident, Bomba personnel were summoned to put out a burning car after its engine caught fire atop the flyover at Jalan Tun Jugah on Thursday night.

Firemen rushed to the scene following a call received at 10pm and arrived to find flames engulfing the front section of a Mitsubishi GTO.

The situation was brought under control within 10 minutes, with damage to the vehicle’s engine estimated at 30 per cent.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
