‘Carry out more programmes to help Sabah women’

KOTA KINABALU: Initiatives to raise awareness on genuine women’s rights should not only be further intensified in urban areas but also in rural Sabah.

Officiating at a seminar organised by Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia’s (ABIM) Women’s Affairs Bureau (HELWA) here yesterday, Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid said Sabah leaders would like to see more programmes carried out by similar associations and organisations to help the women in the state.

The move is imperative because women, being the backbone of the family institution, are integral in helping the government to implement development and awareness programmes that will benefit and prosper the people.

“We want associations or organisations representing women to be aware of current issues involving their interests, rights, dignity, law, education, discrimination and others so that a joint solution can be made to arrange suitable programs to help curb further deterioration among the communities,” said Jainab at the ‘Women’s Rights According to Islamic Perspective’ Seminar.

Some 400 participants from federal and government bodies as well as the public were present during the one-day event. Also present at the ceremony was Sabah Abim Helwa deputy head Siti Jawisah Abdul Majid.
