KUCHING: The Works Ministry has set up an operation room as flood is expected to occur across the country now that it is the monsoon season.

According to its minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf, the operations room were set up to receive any information on flood and road closure due to the disaster which would then be channeled through the social and electronic media.

“The information will be useful as the public can get the latest update on any flashflood, landslides or damaged roads in the country through our social Twitter account at @JKRMalaysia,” said Fadillah after officiating at the Satok Run in Jalan Muhibbah here yesterday.

Fadillah said the Twitter account was frequently updated if there was any development and urged road users and the public in general to use it as their source for any disaster-related news.

He also said his ministry had directed all district PWD engineers to be ready for the possibility of flood in their area and to address the issue as soon as possible according to the standard operating procedures.

On a related matter, Fadillah urged members of the public not to believe any news shared in the social media especially from unreliable sources.

“Study the validity of the news or information first before sharing them as it might create confusion or panic among the public.”

He said false news often caused panic among the public and also affected business entities in the particular area due to public fear of disaster.

Over 130 people participated in the run which was divided into four categories.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) Satok Youth chief Iskandar Sharkawi was also present.
