SERIAN: The problem of limited parking lots and traffic congestion in Serian town is expected to be greatly alleviated once the proposed new carpark is implemented next year.

Serian District Council (MDS)’s Tourism, Landscape and Tourism Standing Committee chairman, Councillor Gabriel Kajeh Menggu, said with the elevation of Serian to a division, the problem would worsen if steps were not taken to solve the issue.

“Traffic congestions and bottlenecks, however, will be history with the creation of new access roads out of the golden triangle of Serian town.

“The council has engaged a consultant to conduct a thorough study to end the whole problem,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He added the proposed new carpark would be implemented next year at the back of Fortuna Building, between Ambank and Serian Chung Hua School.

“We are looking at the traffic woes very seriously, especially when we expect to receive an increasing number of visitors following the elevation of Serian to a division and the building of the Pan Borneo Highway.”

He said the problem had to be resolved or it would hamper efforts to make Serian town an important stopover centre.
