BINTULU: Five died and seven others including a baby were injured in a fatal road accident involving a saloon car and a pick-up truck at KM77 Tatau-Sibu Road yesterday.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue station chief Di Hatta Gobel said six personnel from Bomba Tatau led by Azrel Izaidi were rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at around 5.17pm.

Rescuers managed to extricate the six victims who were trapped inside the saloon car.

However, according to Di Hatta, five of them were killed on the spot and a baby was rushed to Selangau clinic for medical treatment.

The five victims who died were identified as Jawan Jungan, 39, from Rh Jungan Mile 36 Tamin, Jln Oya Sibu; Mandah Medan from Rh Robin, Tg Taroh Baru Selangau; Robin Igat, 49; Melati Robin, 24 and Marrianne Riyung Jawan, 5.

Fortunately, the five-month-old Lorraine Jawan survived the tragic accident.

The pick-up truck driver identified as Jimbun Barendak, 47 was not injured but five of his passengers who sustained injuries received treatment at Selangau clinic.

The five passengers were Jimbun’s wife Moni Nanang, 44 (abdomen pain), Biah Chaong, 70 (broken right leg), Loxsley Jimbun, 15 (broken left leg), Eric Sap Jimbun and Joseley Ericca Jimbun, 3.

The rescue operation ended at 6.30pm.
