KUCHING: Semariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali brought cheer to 50 children aged 7 to 12 from her constituency when she took them shopping for their school uniform yesterday.

“For the boys we bought them a pair of uniforms – shirts, trousers – belt, socks and shoes and the girls we got them Baju Melayu style uniform, socks and shoes,” she said when met at the store at Jalan Kulas here yesterday.

“These children were raised mostly by single mothers and from low income families,” she added.

The political secretary to the chief minister said the initiative was in line with the ‘Back To School’ programme organised by her ‘Squad Sayang and Biro Ekonomi N7 Semariang’ to help ease the burden of poor parents and those with many chidren going to school.

“We spent RM100 on each child and this is a second programme after we distributed 200 school bags to another selected group of children from my constituency recently,” she said.

She said the programme had been carried out for many years and thanked the organiser for ensuring that the programme went smoothly.

Nine-year-old Zaid Salleh Rahman, when met by reporters, thanked Sharifah Hasidah for her contribution which had helped to ease his father’s burden.

Zaid, who will attend primary four at Sekolah Kebangsaan Semerah Padi next year, said he has seven siblings and he is the fifth child.

Hailing from Kampung Midin Semariang, he said he came with friends.

The boy who did fairly well in school told reporters that he would take care of his uniforms.
