SARIKEI: The civil service, as an integral part of the government’s machinery, ought to perform up to expectations of both the people and the government While the government’s main task was to plan policies and socio-economic development programmes to improve the livelihood of the people, the civil service has to do their part to translate them into the desired end-products, said Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan.

Mawan, who described the civil service as agent of change and implementer of government policies and development programmes, said he hoped they would always maintain their loyalty towards the government of the day to ensure all the development programmes are implemented and delivered.

He was glad to note that members of the local civil service had given their utmost in ensuring that their assignments were accomplished on time which deserved his billing as well-disciplined and service-oriented lots.

Mawan was speaking at a Christmas and New Year gathering organised by Sarikei Division Sarawak Government Services Welfare and Recreational Council (Maksak) at Sri Nyelong here last Wednesday night.

Mawan, who is also Pakan Assemblyman and Member of Parliament of Saratok, said that he was very thankful to every member of the civil service in the Division for their commendable performance, hence as a gesture of appreciation, he pledged a grant of RM5,000 to help foot the expenses of the night’s gathering.

Sarikei Resident Dr Anthony Valentine Laiseh, in his welcoming speech, said that the gathering was the first of its kind ever organised by Maksak Sarikei.

He said it reflected a strong team spirit, friendship, harmony and solidarity among the local members of the civil service irrespective of their racial background or faith, and he believed they would be able to organise similar gatherings during other festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, or Gawai Dayak.

He said he had high confidence in the local Maksak based on the high level of commitment and dedication they had shown in the successful running of big events including their implementation of government policies and development programmes since he took over as the Division’s Chief Administrator a few months ago.

Among those present were Resident’s wife Patricia Jimmy, Sarikei District Officer Khalid Andong, Meradong District Officer Mastapa Julaihi, Julau District Officer Mohd Said Atoi, Pakan District Officer Alex Liau, Sarikei District Council chairman Chan Phan Chan, and Meradong/Julau District Council secretary Adrian Luang.
