KUCHING: The Ministry of Transport recently made a working visit to Kuching Port Authority (KPA) and Tebedu Inland Port as well as Pending and Senari Terminal.

The delegation was led by the ministry’s deputy secretary general Dato Chua Kok Ching.

At the meeting with KPA led by its chairman Dato Awang Bemee Ali Basah, matters discussed included the dredging of the Sarawak River to provide better and safer passage for not only bigger container vessels but tourists cruise vessels as well as marine and fisheries vessels and those of the search and rescue, navy and police.

The advent of Asean Free Trade Area (AFTA) and Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 facilitates free movement of cargo and people across borders of Asean countries.

Therefore, border trade has to be regularised and there is a need for infrastructure upgrading. hence the road between Serian and Tebedu has to be upgraded to a dual carriage way and the road gradient approaching Tebedu must be made fit for trailers.

KPA management team and SM Inland Port staff including representatives from the state Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Communications as well as the State Economic Planning Unit were also present at the meeting and discussion.
