CYBERJAYA: Breastfeeding, a noble and pure act which is very much encouraged is not meant for public viewing, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

Commenting on public outrage over an issue where a woman took a photograph while she was breastfeeding her baby and sharing it on the social media, she said breastfeeding was a very private moment between a mother and her child and should not be for public display.

“Values and social norms govern our behaviour in public,” she said adding that mothers could breastfeed their babies in public places but they should guard their modesty.

“Mothers at the ministry are encouraged to breastfeed in the ministry’s nursing mothers’ area,” she told reporters after delivering a talk on ‘Children in Malaysia’ in conjunction with Universiti Islam Malaysia (UIM) International Convention on Wisdom 2.0 (ICW 2.0) here yesterday.

Earlier in her speech, Rohani informed that the Children (Amendment) Bill 2015 would be tabled in Parliament for second and third reading in March. — Bernama
