PUTRAJAYA: Security at key entry points, especially airports, borders, train stations and ports has been beefed up with better surveillance equipment as a precautionary measure against security threats, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai yesterday.

“The preventive measures at key entry points have been in place since last year,” he told reporters after launching a Moral Awareness Campaign at his office here.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) for example had refurbished and strengthened its equipment at the airports with the capability to monitor and trace terrorists entering the country, he said.

More surveillance equipment such as closed circuit television (CCTV) units were installed with more security personnel to strengthen security at ports and train stations, he said.

Expressing concern over terrorist attacks in Jakarta and Turkey, Liow said: “It is a serious issue and we have to put in a lot of preventive measures. I hope the public will stay calm and have confidence in the country’s security forces to protect and prevent untoward incidents in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, when commenting on the menace of unlicenced lorries (lori hantu), Liow said the Transport Ministry would conduct a study on lorries that do not have road tax and insurance but use public roads.

He said such lorries are not allowed to use public roads as they posed a danger to the safety of motorists.

“We will review the lori hantu position…unless you are in the deep jungle, you (lori hantu) cannot use public roads because it will endanger other road users,” he said.

Last week, a ‘lori hantu’ lost control and ploughed into 37 vehicles near a school in Bandar Damai Perdana, Cheras, Kajang, killing two school children aged 13, and injuring a few others. — Bernama
