Duo charged with trafficking 74.50 grams of drugs

KOTA KINABALU: Two men were jointly charged at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday with trafficking in 74.50 grammes of ketamin.

Iris Yap Siew Hung and Yong Zhen Xi, both aged 22, were charged before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act, read together under Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The indictment provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. They were apprehended for allegedly trafficking in the drugs in a hotel room at Sadong Jaya Commercial Centre, Jalan Karamunsing here at 4.30am on Jan 27, 2015.

Iris and Yong were also jointly charged with possessing 0.62 gramme of Erimin 5 at the same place and time. The charge was framed under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 12 (3) of the same Act, read together under Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or maximum jail term of five years, or both, on conviction.

No pleas were taken from both accused, who were represented by counsel P.J Perira, pending their chemist’s report. The court fixed March 10 this year for mention and both accused were further remanded under Section 259 of the Criminal Procedure Code, pending disposal of the case.
