KUCHING: A 57-year-old businessman and his family lost a hefty amount of cash and valuables after their house was broken into during the wee hours of yesterday morning.

The incident happened at Jalan Pustaka around 4.15am.

The victim and his wife were sleeping in the master bedroom on the first floor while their two sons and a daughter were sleeping in their own rooms downstairs.

The victim was awakened when his bedroom door was forced open and four masked men wearing gloves and armed with knives entered. The family members were then rounded up into the room and tied up by the burglars.

The burglars ransacked the house and made away with several branded wristwatches, mobile phone, computer tablets, foreign currencies, Malaysian Ringgit and jewelleries. Total loss was estimated at around RM60,000.

From their conversation, the suspects were believed to be Indonesians. Preliminary investigation showed that they entered the house from a ground floor window. A report was lodged at the Gita Police Station.

It was later found that a burglary happened earlier at around 3am at a house located some 10 feet away. The victim was also a businessman who lost a jacket worth RM200.

Both cases are believed to be related and investigation is ongoing.
