KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should help train and assist more Dayak women to venture into business.

Dayak women, particularly the Ibans, needed such help to lead better lives, said Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Nyipa on Tuesday.

He gave the thumbs-up to SDNU president Tan Sri William Mawan and its Women chief, Dato Sri Empiang Jabu, for encouraging the Dayaks to venture into business all these years.

Speaking to reporters after opening a beauty centre belonging to a female SDNU Samarahan member at Bandar Riyal here, Rayong said those with skills like beauty care and hairdressing should muster the courage to set up their own business.

He admitted it was not easy to succeed as an entrepreneur because there are many obstacles along the way, but there are lots of growth opportunities too.

“The government and non-governmental agencies are ready to assist. There are many government-related financial aid and incentives available,” said Rayong, who is also United People’s Party (UPP) Youth chief.

Present at the opening ceremony were Darasatha Beauty Centre and Saloon owner Nana Sabang, its advisor Ganchai Jinta, SDNU Youth chief Churchill Edward Drem, SDNU senior member Anthony Banyan and Reverend Jonathan Lawie and Reverend Nora Kulih.

He advised those who are interested to go into business to not see gender as a shortcoming or be intimidated. They should, instead, emulate the many successful women in the world.

“Have a positive mindset and stand tall at all times.”
