JASIN: The Ministry of Education (MOE) will not compromise on the safety of students in schools and always ensure that their officers fully exercise their responsibilities.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the safety of students  not only involve infrastructure but also while going to and from school and  bullying by fellow students.

The officers should send out letters to the state education directors, district education officers, school principals and teachers to be wary of things such as the sewerage system.

“They have to inspect the facilities and must be responsible for the safety of students in schools,” he told reporters after visiting the family of Raja Nur Najjwa Ariana Raja Mohamad Shahrunizam here, yesterday.

Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Education Ministry director-general Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof.

School student Raja Nur Najjwa Ariana, 7, died after falling into the septic tank of SRA Parit Penghulu Benteng, Sungai Rambai on Feb 1.

Mahdzir said the MOE would cooperate with Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) to view the sewerage system in schools to prevent such incident from recurring.

“The sewerage system in schools are under the supervision of IWK.

“I contacted IWK yesterday asking for their cooperation on this matter,” he added. — Bernama
