KUALA LUMPUR: There is no foul play or sabotage involved in the two fire incidents on the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) Intercity’s Express Rakyat train locomotives on Feb 9 and 11.

KTMB in a statement yesterday, said the fire incidents were caused by technical glitches.

“Based on an internal probe, the exact cause is still under forensic investigations by the Fire and Rescue Department, KTMB Fleet Maintenance and Engineering Department, Department of Safety, Health, Employment and Environment  (OSHEN) and the insurance agency at Batu Gajah Depot.

“We expect a detailed report on the cause of fire on both locomotives to be completed within a month from now,” the statement said.

On Feb 9, fire broke out on the locomotive of a Express Rakyat train, about a kilometre from Sungai Gadut station near here, due to engine damage.

In the 2.35pm incident, the 310 passengers and the driver on the train heading to Penang from Johor Baharu were unhurt.

On Feb 11, fire broke out on another Ekspres Rakyat 2 locomotive travelling from Johor Baharu to Butterworth, Penang, at Kampung Kuala Tanjung, near Kamunting, Perak at 8.45pm.

All 300 passengers and staff escaped uninjured in the incident. — Bernama
