Police to propose increase in traffic compound rates

MARANG: The police will proceed with the proposal to raise the maximum fine for traffic offences in an effort to reduce the fatality rate, which has been rising each year.

Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Muhd Fuad Abu Zarim said the police were currently reviewing the process, including in terms of the amendment of the legislation before it is implemented at the latest by year’s end.

“Of course it will have to go through the legislative process, as previously, the maximum compound of RM300 set was part of Section 120 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“So if we want to make amendments, it must go through the process at the Cabinet level, then it will be presented to Parliament, and only after being approved by the Parliament, it can be enforced.

“For the time being, we still adopt the existing law and hope that amendments can be implemented latest by the end of this year (based on the recommendation of the police),” he told reporters after visiting the district police headquarters (IPD) in Marang here, yesterday.

Also present were Bukit Aman Traffic cief SAC Mahamad Akhir Darus, Terengganu police deputy chief Datuk Hashim Abd Jalil and Marang police chief, DSP Mohd Suhaimi Ali.

Muhd Fuad said it was an appropriate move as the compound amount had not been increased for the past 28 years, and the amount may be too low to deter errant motorists. — Bernama
