MIRI: The repainting of the open public space at Jalan Persiaran Kabor here, better known as the ‘old men street’, will start tomorrow.

According to Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai when met by reporters recently, the main objective of the repainting work is to give the area a ‘face lift’ and make it more welcoming to both tourists and locals.

“The work will take 10 days to be completed and we have informed shop operators in the area about this project.

“We hope all the affected shop operators can collaborate with us and make ways for the repainting work to be carried out,” he said.

In this connection, Lai called on the shop operators to clear the five-footway of their shops and not displaying any items there during the period so that the repainting job can be carried out smoothly.

Lai said the work was supposed to be carried out last month but was postponed in view of the Chinese New Year celebration.

“We had to postpone it until Feb 23 so as not to affect businesses of the shop operators during the festive season.

Apologising for any inconvenience that may arise, Lai urged those affected by the 10-day face lift to bear the temporary hindrance.

“Once completed,” said Lai, “the area which is a popular spot among senior citizens to relax, eat and drink will have a better look”.
