KUCHING: The proposed improvement to perimeter drains at Padang Merdeka, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and Jalan Masjid is now at the design stage.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Commission member Dato Wee Hong Seng said the improved drainage system would resolve flood issues in the area.

“Work will start as soon as the designing work is done. DBKU is targeting April this year for the project to start,” he said when met at a Chinese New Year gathering at DBKU headquarters here recently.

Wee said the project was estimated to cost over RM1 million.

On another matter, Wee hoped that social media assaults on DBKU staff would stop as DBKU workers were merely doing their job.

He lamented there were some individuals who had the “post first and think later” mentality, and they never thought it over whether what the DBKU staff did merited criticisms.

Wee added that criticisms, including those from politicians, should be constructive and fair.

“To the general public, if there are any issues, I advise them to engage us as we are here to serve. Like them (public), we only have the interest of the community at heart.”

To those DBKU workers who were unfairly criticised, Wee advised them not to be disheartened and to remain committed and professional in their work.

Present at the gathering were acting DBKU director Kartina Zamhari and engineering project section head Ng Liang Seng.
