That section of the road which floods every time after heavy rain.

KUCHING: More than 20 years have passed after the completion of Jalan Puncak Borneo (old Penrissen Road) but the flood problem at the same stretch of road, from the new SIB church right up to the bridge at the junction of Kampung Giam, remains unsolved.

Saying this was Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen’s political secretary, Sanjan Daik, through a press statement yesterday.

“When the old Penrissen Road was reconstructed and upgraded in 1993, the government could have avoided the flood problem at this stretch of road if the road level from the church up to the bridge at Kpg Giam junction is of the same height,” he said.

The stretch of road was built about two metres lower than the bridge causing water from the nearby hills to flow and accumulate at the stretch causing a one to two-metre deep pool.

“Another factor that also contributes to the flooding is the drainage system. The rain water that flows into the river is blocked by the landowners when doing dumping works on their land without constructing an outlet for the water to flow into the river.

“As such, the government should raise the submerged part by at least two metres making it the same level with the bridge and also to build drains on both sides of the road to solve the problem once and for all,” he said.
