KUCHING: Police in Padawan have not received any report of theft cases affecting homes of flood evacuees during the ongoing flood situation.

Padawan District police chief Supt Ng Ah Lek said his men were monitoring closely flood-affected areas to avoid unwanted incidents from adding to the flood victims’ hardship.

“So far, we have not received any police reports on thefts in the flood victims’ homes. Additionally, traffic police personnel are discharging their daily duties and will respond to any congestion at flood-affected roads,” he said.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing the hand over of duty as head of district Traffic and Public Order yesterday, Ng said his men would continue to focus on security-related matters during the ongoing flood situation, including making sure the five evacuation centres in the district – currently housing 1,041 victims – were operating smoothly.

He advised the public to move to these centres or to higher ground should the water level in their area rise and to avoid high-risk activities.

“As you know, death occurred on Feb 20 when a teenager was swept away while trying to cross a submerged road from Kampung Panchor to Kampung Mang. It is important for the public to take extra precautions during this period.”

Earlier, Ng witnessed the handover of duty to ASP Othman Sulaiman from ASP Muhamad Rizal Alias who is now the new Padawan Traffic and Public Order head.

Muhamad Rizal was previously the Padawan Management Department head, while Othman is due to be appointed new Sri Aman District police chief and promoted to the rank of DSP.
