MARUDI: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP)-nominated candidate for Marudi Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said he is touched by the warm reception and support he received during his visits to various longhouses and other places in the constituency recently.

He said the people had been very enthusiastic and spontaneous in receiving him during his visits to at least 54 longhouses – all upon invitation by the longhouse folks – and to other settlements in the constituency so far.

“They welcomed me with ‘piring’ and traditional dances and so on with thousands of people turning up to welcome.

‘I’m very motivated by this and will move on to engage with the rakyat and listen to what they have to say. I will continue to visit them,” he said when speaking to The Borneo Post.

Penguang who retired as a senior civil servant in December last year started moving around in the constituency after he was nominated by SPDP as the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the constituency.

Support for him is said to be growing.

Penguang said with his experience serving in various capacities in the civil service he had a lot to offer and was ready to serve the rakyat.

Some longhouse chiefs met during Penguang’s visit to their places said they had been involved in politics for long and were amazed by the latter’s personality.

“He entertained each and
every one of us in the crowd who gathered to shake hands with him,” they said.
