KUCHING: The current drainage system, which can only hold up to 150 to 180 millimetres (mm) of rainfall, is one of the main reasons why the flash flood occured today, according to Minister of Housing Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In a press conference held at 12pm today at Grand Margherita Hotel, Abang Johari said that the rainfall calculated at the time was 308mm in the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) area.

“Meanwhile, other areas recorded rainfall of over 200mm. The present design of the drainage system is not capable of holding so much rainfall.

“Therefore, within the next two weeks, we are going to hold a meeting with local councils, experts and other relevant agencies to find longterm solutions in overcoming flash floods,” Abang Johari stated.
