Parents advised to focus on what’s best for their children

KUALA LUMPUR: Parents should put aside a selfish attitude by not using tough measures on their children in order to achieve an ideal type of child.

The author of ‘Mindful Mom’, Michelle Lim-Chua said most of the parents especially Asians gave too much emphasis on their children’s academic performance instead of focusing on what is best for their children without giving too much pressure.

“Situations such as getting their children in too many extra classes like music class, or academic subjects by creating the idea that the children will become smarter are always in our society’s mindset.

“They (parents) also constantly compare themselves with other moms eventhough parenting is absolutely not about winning.

“Children should be allowed to enjoy their childhood naturally by using simple and natural approach such as bringing

them to the outdoors to bond and enjoying the nature besides creating a good relationship among them,” she told Bernama after sharing her modern parenting approach on Coffee for Parenting first series programme, here on Friday.

Also present at the programme organised by Pusat Kreatif Kanak-Kanak Tuanku Bainun (PKKTB) was Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim.

Michelle, a mother of two, released her first book last year which was written especially for young Asian parents by focusing on her experience in parenting and sharing natural methods in raising a child.

PKKTB chairman Raja Datuk Seri Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah said the programme aimed at providing

parents with a platform to obtain tips on parenting, child development and addressing challenging issues that modern day parents go through everyday.

“This programme will enable them to learn from the experts in various fields while having free coffee in a relaxed environment,” she said.

Azureen said the programme would be held on the last Saturday every month throughout the year at PKKTB, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and the public could contact 03-77338559 for further details. — Bernama
