Crackdown on media can harm BN – PKR

KOTA KINABALU: A clampdown on investigative media, including blocking various news portals, as done by the ruling party lately, would have a boomerang effect on Barisan Nasional and only serves to further diminish whatever public confidence is left for the embattled federal leadership, said Sabah’s Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

State PKR communication director Patrick Sadom said although scuttling freedom of expression was bad news to truth-seeking Malaysians, it was also a blessing in disguise for the country as more parties would now be even more perseverance in seeking an alternative to BN.

“We condemn BN’s selective punishment on media outlets. There are pro-BN media who always inflamed tension and wrote baseless pieces and yet the BN government doesn’t even lift a finger against these media,” he said in a statement issued here yesterday.

Sadom claimed that blocking Sarawak Report and The Malaysian Insider from public access would somehow be ineffective because internet-savvy readers could still be able to access these portals.
