Two men discharged, acquitted of gang robbery charge

KUCHING: Two men walked free out of the Sessions Court here yesterday after they were discharged and acquitted from a gang robbery charge.

Judge Amelati Parnell made the decision on Amirul Aiman Rushdan, 21, from Jalan Muhibbah and Ahmad Redzua Abdul Razak, 33, from Kampung Bintangor yesterday, which was the second day of trial after being told that the complainant was not interested to continue with the case.

The court was told that the complainant had voluntarily withdrawn the report he made against the two men whom he alleged had robbed him of his RM20 cash and a smartphone around 6am on Nov 1 last year at Jalan Haji Mataim here.

They were acquitted from a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction.

In a separate case, six men who were remanded for a day to facilitate police investigation into a ‘fish gambling machine’ activity were released on police bail.

According to their defence counsel Lim Lian Kee, the authority was still investigating whether the operator had the licence from the local authority, or if the premises was allowed to operate the machines as recreational activity.

The men were arrested on Monday and were brought to the court for remand on Tuesday, which expired yesterday.
