SIBU: There are plans to make use of Mukah Biomass Power Plant in future as a training ground for mechanical and electrical technicians.

Olive Energy Sdn Bhd chief executive officer (CEO) Sylvester Wong, who disclosed this yesterday, said this would be done in partnership with Mukah Polytechnic.

“That is our plan. The state is in need of more of such skilled personnel. Their knowledge is needed in power plants,” Wong added.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem launched the RM120-million Mukah Biomass Power Plant last year.

The project, carried out by Olive Energy Sdn Bhd, was expected to start early next year while the targeted date of operation was Sept 1, 2017, it was reported.

This will be the state’s first grid-connected renewable energy biomass power plant.

The project involves the development of 12.1 megawatts biomass electricity generation plant in Mukah, whereby 10 megawatts of the generated electricity would be exported to the grid at 21 sen per kilowatt.

Wong, who is a mechanical engineer having studied at Monash University, said this was to turn biomass from palm oil mills into electricity.

“The whole venture revolves around the passion of seeing waste as a form of alternative energy to clean the environment and give palm oil industry a better image.”

Towards this end, he believed this pilot kind would demonstrate to business leaders in Sarawak that there were viable ventures that could create values to business, society, the environment and create future job opportunities and growth.
