KUCHING: About a thousand people witnessed the city of Kuching illuminating the dark with candles, illuminated balloons and luminous bracelets to observe Earth Hour last night.

Earth Hour 2016 is the fourth programme of its kind organised by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, WWF- Malaysia (Sarawak) and Kuching Waterfront Management to create awareness on climate change and to create a sustainable world.

The event, which took place from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, was in line with the annual global initiative against abusing Mother Nature.

Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali officiated at the event at the Square Tower in Kuching Waterfront. Apart from switching off non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet, fun-filled activities organised for members of public to participate included Earth Hour Colourful Night Ride, Earth Hour Illuminated Walk and Mini Concert Earth Hour 2016.

Three hundred people participated in the 17km Earth Hour Colourful Night Ride while 700 people participated in the 700m Earth Illuminated Walk also flagged off by Sharifah.
