KUCHING: A gardener convicted of armed robbery was yesterday sentenced to 10 years behind bars and ordered to be given two whippings by the Sessions Court here.

The 35-year-old accused Mohammad Asri Zaini was convicted under Section 392 of the Penal Code by Sessions Court Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad after a full trial.

Asri was found guilty of robbing a 36-year-old man of his power bank and a bluetooth device at the Kuching Waterfront here around 1pm in June 2014.

He was armed with a parang when committing the offence.

Last month, the Court ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him and his defence failed to raise any reasonable doubt.

His custodial sentence was ordered to take effect immediately.
